Korg DSS-1

above photo from the collection of Paul Lennon, Northampton, England

The DSS-1 is a 12-bit sampling synthesizer with 8-voice polyphony and 5 octave keyboard. It features 2 digital oscillators per voice, and a VCF that is switchable between 12dB adn 24dB per octave. It has a total memory of 256k allowing it a total of 5.5 seconds of sample time at 48 kHz. Samples are backed up via a 3.5 inch floppy disk drive. The DSS1 also features a built-in dual effects unit with echo, chorus, phaser, flanger with dry signal appearing at the centre of the stereo field and one effect per channel, left and right. It has three completely different ways of producing sound: sampling, additive synthesis and user drawn waveforms. The unison mode turns the DSS1 into a 16 oscillator extremely fat monosynth. ----Paul Lennon
